Our Process
We start by discussing the type of fencing required, the length and height of the boundary, the ground conditions and whether existing fencing needs removing.
We can advise on suitable fencing systems, including the advantages of concrete posts, traditional featheredge construction and specialist fencing for larger or sloping sites. Following a site assessment where appropriate, we prepare a quotation covering the agreed materials and installation.

CONCRETE POSTS & TIMBER FENCING
Why We Often Recommend Concrete Fence Posts
For standard garden boundary fencing, we frequently recommend closeboard or lap panels installed between slotted concrete posts, with concrete gravel boards beneath the panels.
Timber fence posts can deteriorate through prolonged contact with damp ground, particularly around ground level. Concrete posts avoid timber decay and can provide a longer-lasting support system when correctly installed.
There is also a practical advantage when the fence eventually needs replacing. With slotted concrete posts, individual panels can often be removed and replaced without disturbing the posts or foundations, potentially reducing future replacement costs considerably.
Timber posts remain available where their appearance is preferred, and we can discuss the advantages and limitations of both systems before installation.

TRADITIONAL & SPECIALIST FENCING
Featheredge, Sloping Ground & Specialist Fencing
For sloping boundaries, traditional featheredge fencing can offer advantages over standard prefabricated panels. Using morticed timber posts, horizontal arris rails and individually fitted featheredge boards, the fence can be constructed to follow the gradient of the ground rather than stepping each panel up or down.
We also undertake a wide range of specialist fencing installations, including picket fencing, post and rail, deer and stock fencing, cleft timber fencing, decorative timber panels, metal fencing and aluminium fencing.
Our work extends to pedestrian gates and traditional four- and five-bar gates, with suitable posts and fittings for the proposed installation.
Where fencing forms part of a larger garden refurbishment, we can coordinate the work with retaining walls, patios, decking and other landscaping, ensuring boundary levels and finished surfaces are considered together.

Sean firstly, relaxed but professional on the first call and very quick at arranging a visit to look at the work to be done.

How Much Does Garden Fencing Cost?
The cost of garden fencing depends on the length and height of the boundary, the chosen fencing system, ground conditions and site access.
Standard closeboard or lap panels with concrete posts and gravel boards have different material and labour requirements from traditional featheredge fencing constructed with morticed posts and arris rails. Specialist fencing, including post and rail, deer fencing, metal fencing and bespoke decorative styles, is priced according to the installation requirements.
Concrete posts can have a higher initial material cost than some timber alternatives, but their resistance to timber decay and the ability to replace panels independently can make them economical over the longer term.
We prepare quotations covering the agreed fencing specification, removal of existing materials where required, post foundations, installation and any associated gates or landscaping.

Are concrete fence posts better than timber posts?
We frequently recommend concrete posts for standard panel fencing because they do not suffer from timber decay and can provide a durable support system.
With slotted concrete posts, damaged or ageing panels can often be replaced without removing the posts, reducing the work and cost involved in future fence replacement.
Timber posts remain an option where their appearance is preferred.
What is the difference between closeboard panels and featheredge fencing?
Closeboard panels are prefabricated fencing sections that can be installed between slotted concrete or timber posts.
Traditional featheredge fencing is constructed on site using morticed posts, arris rails and individual overlapping boards.
Both provide solid timber boundaries, but traditional featheredge construction offers greater flexibility for following sloping ground and irregular boundary layouts.
What fencing is best for a sloping garden?
Traditional featheredge fencing with morticed posts and arris rails is often a good option for sloping boundaries because the rails and boards can follow the gradient of the ground.
Standard fence panels generally need to be stepped between posts where levels change significantly.
We assess the slope and boundary conditions before recommending the most suitable installation.
Do you install post-and-rail, deer and stock fencing?
Yes. Alongside domestic garden fencing, we install post-and-rail fencing, deer fencing, stock fencing and cleft timber fencing.
These systems can be suitable for larger gardens, paddocks, rural properties and areas where a different type of boundary or animal management is required.
We can discuss the intended use, height, materials and installation requirements.

Do I need planning permission for garden fencing?
In England, fences are often permitted up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre where adjacent to a highway used by vehicles, subject to the relevant planning conditions.
Restrictions can apply to listed buildings, properties with removed permitted development rights and other particular circumstances.
Where there is uncertainty, the planning position should be checked before installation.
